Why Choose Real Shearling for Exceptional Warmth

Natural insulation & unparalleled comfort

Real shearling provides exceptional thermal insulation through its unique structure where dense wool fibers naturally trap air, creating a barrier that retains body heat while allowing moisture to escape. Unlike synthetic alternatives, shearling offers a built-in thermostat effect, automatically adjusting warmth based on your body temperature. The leather exterior provides durability while the wool interior delivers soft, luxurious comfort against your skin.

Beautiful patina over time & timeless style

A genuine shearling coat develops a rich, distinctive patina with wear, gaining character and charm that synthetic materials cannot replicate. This natural aging process enhances the coat's appearance, making each piece uniquely yours. Beyond its aesthetic evolution, shearling resists wind and maintains its elegant silhouette for years, combining timeless style with exceptional durability—a true investment that remains fashionable season after season.

Finding Your Perfect Fit and Style

Each piece is meticulously tailored to ensure a flattering fit regardless of height or frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shearling coat?

A coat cut from lambskin with its wool left intact. On one side, a velvety or smooth leather. On the other, natural wool that insulates, breathes and regulates temperature. There is no added lining and no synthetic fibre: a single material provides both the warmth and the structure of the garment. Shearling has been one of Maison Yves Salomon’s founding crafts since 1920.

Toscana, Merino, Merinillo, Lacon: what are the differences?

Each quality has its own hand.

  • Toscana: long, silky, softly waved wool, for a generous silhouette.
  • Merino: dense wool, finished straight or curly, for enveloping warmth.
  • Merinillo: finer, lighter wool, here with a glossy finish on the leather side.
  • Lacon: a shearling with a clean drape, designed for structured pieces.

The choice of quality depends as much on the look you want as on the climate.

Can a shearling coat be worn in the city and in the mountains?

Yes. The extra-long or double-breasted coat accompanies a Parisian winter with effortless elegance. The hooded jacket or bomber moves naturally to Courchevel, Megève, Gstaad or St. Moritz, for resort walks and après-ski. Certain models offer insulation down to -10 °C (14 °F). On reversible pieces, the wool or leather side can be chosen to suit the moment.

Which cut should I choose for a timeless look?

It depends on the silhouette you want.

  • Long belted coat: it defines the waist and turns the natural volume of shearling into a feminine line.
  • Extra-long or double-breasted coat: a strong presence, with a tailored feel.
  • Pea coat or bomber: shorter and more urban.
  • Cape, short or fringed: a more distinctive look.

The palette stays natural (camel, brown, beige, black, white) and no logo appears. The material defines the piece.

How should I care for a shearling coat?

Gently brush the wool with a soft brush, always in the direction of the pile. If caught in the rain, let the coat air-dry on a wide hanger, away from any heat source. Once a year, entrust it to a leather and shearling specialist. Out of season, the Maison’s Summer Storage service keeps your coat in suitable conservation conditions until the following winter. Shearling or fur: what is the difference?

They are two distinct materials. Shearling is lambskin with its wool retained: leather on one side, soft, insulating natural wool on the other. It belongs to the leather family and is not considered fur. Fur refers to the pelt of animals such as mink or fox, crafted for its density and lustre. Maison Yves Salomon has mastered both crafts since 1920. Shearling offers natural warmth and a more raw allure. Fur brings a dense touch and a singular luminosity.
